how to get GPS directions via text message

Google mapsHere is the coolest tech thing I’ve learned recently: you don’t need a GPS unit, an iPhone, or even data plan on your cell phone to get GPS directions without a computer! Google has an amazing text-message interface that can return everything from web results to business phone numbers to directions to your phone via SMS.

Here is what you do:

1. Send a text message to the number GOOGL (46645).

2. Format the text message like this: “directions from address1 to address2″ (don’t put the quotes), replacing address1 and address2 with the real addresses. You don’t have to put in a complete address for either field. For example. I often use my hometown as the source address if I’m going to be using the interstate because I know how to get to the freeway. For example, if you wanted to get from Provo to historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City, you could send the following text message to 46645:

“directions from provo ut to 50 west south temple salt lake city ut” (no quotes).

And voila! Google will send driving directions to your cellphone withOUT you having to own a fancy smartphone or GPS device.

  1. Many of us are used of using GPS to know and to locate the things and the persons that we want to find. But this technology form Google does make sense. This could be a good alternative to GPS, many of us don’t have enough money to purchase a certain GPS. I think this technology will help and Google is not doing this for fun, off course that’s a part. But I think their one reason to come with this kind of thing is they want to help other people who couldn’t purchase their own GPS for now.
